GENERAL INFORMATION ON COURSES
For details of all course (in Hebrew), see

UNDER GRADUATE COURSES
All courses at the undergraduate level are contained within the study
program "Plant Sciences in Agriculture".
The main purpose of the courses is to prepare the students to cope with
the dynamic developments of modern agriculture in Israel and worldwide,
which is based on marketing of quality agricultural products, on novel
biological achievements, and on awareness to environmental quality and
nature conservation. The intensive modern agriculture requires
investments in production means and demands high levels of knowledge and
training to obtain maximal success under changing conditions and
increased competition.
Thus, the objectives of the courses are to:
- Provide dynamic principles in natural sciences, particularly in
biology, plant and ecology, as a basis for the implementation of advanced
methods in agriculture and nature conservation.
- Develop deep understanding of principles and processes associated
with cultivation and production of agricultural quality products.
- Provide genetic and biotechnological knowledge for the understanding
of complex biological processes and for the development of advanced
breeding methods.
- Develop independent thinking problem analysis skills and the ability
to seek appropriate solutions, by using literature references and
experimental tools.
- Train graduate student toward their integration in extension and
production systems, which are related to various agricultural branches
and to systems dealing with forest and grazing areas and with nature
conservation.
- Provide the scientific and professional basis for advanced studies
(M.Sc. and Ph.D.)
GRADUATE COURSES
All courses at the graduate level are contained within four study
program, as detailed below:
Plant Sciences in Agriculture
The courses provide knowledge on basic principles in plant
sciences and their implementation in modern agriculture, including basic
knowledge on the structure and function of plant systems - from
plant-environment relationships to the sub-cell level as well as courses
in plant biotechnology.
Field and Vegetable Crops
Agricultural production for export in Israel includes: seeds and breeding
materials, and fresh and processed products. M.Sc. and Ph.D. courses
prepare the students to become part of the dynamic system. Thus, the
goals of these courses are to provide a broad understanding on principles
and processes of field and vegetable crop production, emphasizing aspects
of environmental conservation, and development of skills to analyze
problems and to find optimal solutions. Courses for graduate students
include: crop breeding and modeling of plant growth, advanced subjects in
weed science, molecular aspects in plant ecology and the genetics of
field and vegetable crops. The program aims to provide knowledge on
disciplines of basic and applied research for the benefit of farmers and
the environment.
Horticulture
The courses are based on providing a thorough understanding of the
physiology and biochemistry of basic processes in fruit trees,
ornamentals, flowers and forest trees. The knowledge gained is applied in
the dissertation, in which the student demonstrates the implementation of
theoretical knowledge in investigating a practical agricultural problem.
Genetics and Breeding
The goals of the courses are: (a) To train students to become independent
researchers in genetics and breeding, based on the broad genetic basis
they gained in the courses. (b) To broaden the theoretical knowledge in
classical genetics and novel molecular approaches. (c) To provide
background knowledge in genetics to students in other departments. (d) To
apply the knowledge acquired to the various aspects of modern
agriculture.
